Abstract
Extensive experiments by the author in manufacturing coin dies, casting silver coinage blanks, and actually striking silver coins made possible a series of interesting observations and conclusions. The ancient Greeks probably used bronze dies more frequently than steel ones, the bronze alloy they used being most likely as strong as the steel of the period. Hubbing of dies was technically feasible. Blanks for silver coins of the four-drachm size could efficiently be obtained by pouring from small crucibles into open moulds. Coins were struck hot in some instances and cold in others. While many elements may have influenced the life of a die, a production in the neighborhood of 8,000 coins may be expected in ancient times. -- AATA
