Abstract

Unaltered carbon is obtained from the organic carbon or collagen in the bone. Dating from the carbonate portion of bone is subject to error by contact with groundwater. The collagen content decreases with age. The oldest bone dated in this manner, 9000 B.C., contained only 0.16 percent. The method can also be used on the conchiolin content of shells but it requires about one kilogram of shells. -- AATA
