The use of synthetics in the restoration of archival material goes back to the late 19th century when seals were protected with zapon-lacquers. Cellulose acetate was first used in1928 and various lamination techniques have been developed since then. Today a big variety of polymers are used for paper restoration. In many cases they have opened up possibilities for the restorer, but their aging behavior should be taken into consideration as well.
