The different techniques of deacidifying paper are described and discussed with respect to their effect on the acids of the paper, especially the treatment with calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate. The latter is used extensively at the restoration department of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek not only for deacidification in water, but also for the preparation of glues and for paper casting.
