Guns salvaged from two warships that foundered in 1628 were submitted for chemical and metallographic examination. The absence of coring suggests that the castings had been annealed. About 300 years' immersion in sea-water had produced a bright-green patina and a general superficial corrosive attack at a rate of <0.0002 in./year. -- AATA
