Some of the research being conducted at the Royal Ontario Museum and the work being done in the restoring of ancient artifacts are described. Examples are as follows: 1. The treatment of rusted iron by electrolytic or chemical treatment, 2. the cleaning (electrolytic or chemical) and application of a protective coating to copper or bronze articles, 3. the restoration of pottery or glazed ware, 4. the restoration of oil-paintings (removal of dammar and application of polyvinyl acetate overcoated with ketone-based resin), 5. the strengthening of porcelain and bone objects by impregnation with polyvinyl acetate, and 6. the restoration of antique furniture by strengthening with polyvinyl acetate, by filling where needed (possibly with a colored wax mixture) and by application of matching finishes. -- AATA
