The surface of the cauldron was obscured by a rough green patina of no aesthetic merit, and a large hole had been repaired with a patch of metal of unsuitable curvature, cut from another vessel and fixed with soft solder. Treatment was aimed at improving the appearance, revealing surface detail and increasing the chemical stability of the object. The incrustation was removed by the standard techniques using alkaline Rochelle salt followed by dilute sulphuric acid. This cleaning revealed an inscription which was partly obscured by secondary deposits of copper. The latter were removed by local treatment using either strong ammonia or anodic oxidation according to the thickness of the deposit. Cathodic reduction and washing followed. The unsuitable patch was replaced by one of electrolytic copper formed on a plaster mould of the required shape and curvature, and was soft-soldered in place using a non-corrosive flux. The surface of the patch was treated with a paste of cuprous chloride and bauxite grit and exposed to moist air for a few days to obtain a surface effect simulating the naturalpitting of the metal of the cauldron. The object was then intensively washed for two months in order to eliminate chlorides and after drying and appropriate surface treatment was lacquered with a thin film of synthetic resin. -- AATA
