An analytical system for the simple identification of synthetic organic pigments is described. The pigments are classified according to their solubility, specific tinctorial properties, their behaviour towards reducing agents andtheir content of inorganic components. Typical reactions of known pigments are compiled in tables to assist further identification. Various chromatographic methods for the separation of mixtures are discussed.
