X-ray diffraction, semi-micro chemical and wet chemical analyses of patina samples from the Statue of Liberty show that it consists of approximately 95% basic copper sulfate, <5% basic copper chloride and <0.1% if any, basic copper carbonate. The samples were taken from the base of the statue, 15 to 20 ft above the pedestal balcony. -- AATA
