The article describes the routine conservation treatment performed ten years previously on a portrait of <i>Alexander Spotswood Payne and his brother John Robert Dandridge Payne with nurse painted by an anonymous American artist, late 18th century. The long neglected and deteriorated canvas was lined with a wax-resin adhesive; old varnish and grime were removed; a spray coating of polybutyl methacrylate was applied; voids were luted and inpainted with pigments in polybutyl methacrylate; a second coating of methacrylate was followed by a final spray of polyvinyl acetate. -- AATA
