Abstract
Photogrammetry (measuring by photography) is the precision form of stereo-photography, where two photographs are taken of an object from slightly different positions and viewed so as to form a three-dimentional image. Some quite advanced apparatus, developed for aerial photography, can be used to obtain accurate measurements from stereopairs. The authors have been engaged in the applications of photogrammetry since 1949, originally in map-making, measurement of excavation volumes for dam construction, etc., but more recently in the documentation and measurement of sculptures. This paper deals with the adaptation of the usual techniques to short-range photogrammetry, an application previously unknown in this country. An accuracy in measurement of a few millimeters was achieved. A Zeiss C III B phototheodolite was used (focal length 19.320 cm.) with the image plate moved back either 5 or 7 mm. from the focal plane. About 120 photographs were taken. To avoid uneven lighting, exposures were made either before sunrise or on cloudy days. A Wild A 7 Autograph was used for contour plotting. From the results, the weight and position of centre of gravity of the statue were calculated. The plans also aided in the con struction of the reinforcement inside the neck.
