Neolithic and Late Bronze Age obsidian tools with a sodic peralkaline composition but which are measurably different from those of this chemical type studied previously have been found for the first time in Sicily. Since all these peralkaline obsidians are believed to originate on Pantelleria, this finding poses the problem of the number of obsidian sources on that island. The elemental composition of a series of 143 obsidians collected on Pantelleria and consisting of both archaeological and various geological samples have been investigated. It is concluded that there are at least five different obsidian sources on Pantelleria, although the exact location of some of these is uncertain. Finally, the lower (i.e. at sea level) obsidian from Balate dei Turchi has never been used in toolmaking, at least not during the Bronze Age of the island of Pantelleria. -- AATA
