Thennoluminescence dating of the ancient pottery and porcelain in the Shanghai Museum for the past 30 years (from 1974 to 2004) was reported in the article. These studies include roughly three stages: in the first stage, the thennoluminescence dating apparatus was made by the museum staffs; the second stage, pottery dating was achieved; in the third stage, a technical difficulty in the porcelain dating was solved. In the past few years, the 1500 years old Chinese porcelains and potteries from the museum and the nation-wide collectors were dated by our method. The results show that the certainty of the authentification test is larger than 95%, and the measurable porcelains make up about 95% of the porcelain dated. It is very successful in discriminating for the imitations of the ancient pottery and porcelain, especially the imitations of ancient Chinese porcelain. The method has gained the public confidence by its high certainty.
