Abstract
A trained wood anatomist with a reference collection can identify plant species from a small sample of wood. Exact identification is hampered by: anatomical similarity of the woods of separate species, too small a sample, too much deterioration of the wood in the sample, the presence of substances such as wax used for impregnation.
