This bibliography covers literature on linseed oil from the time it was first used as a painting medium in the 12th century A.D., when Theophilus described its use, until 1940. When oil painting on canvas attained eminence in the 15th century, recipes for production of linseed oil and artists' paints became common. The literature on linseed oil became more scientific with the development of organic chemistry in the 19th century. The compilers of this bibliography note that the quality of the subsequent work was uneven, but see value in the wealth of empirical data it provides. This information is useful to chemists studying the properties of paint films. It is hoped that the literature review will contribute toward increased understanding of conservation problems, particularly changes occurring in paint films on aging. The references are listed chronologically and alphabetically within each year. Brief abstracts are included for most entries. An author index to Part 1 follows the abstracts.
