Abstract
This supplement contains a series of quotations from classical authors on the subject of textiles. Three pages of introductory remarks by the compiler indicate some of the themes on which the quotations touch. By presenting the quotations of the ancient authors rather than trying to synthesize and present a history of textiles, the compiler hopes to show how contemporaries regarded their own situation. However, this strategy means that emperors and kings are emphasized at the expense of common people, and the Persian/Greek/Roman world is emphasized at the expense of China, Egypt, and India. Apparently sewing was associated ubiquitously with females and goddesses. Among other things, the quotations deal with various kinds of dress, other uses for textiles, the value of textiles, and regional variations in dress.
