This publication contains a review of the history of bottle manufacturing, dating techniques and the methods of distinguishing British from Continental (European) bottles. It elaborates on one hundred and sixty-six specimens of British and Continental origin excavated from Fort de Goede Hoop. The text is liberally illustrated with scale drawings of all the specimens, plates and tables for use as a ready reference for comparative study purposes. The main concentration of specimens falls between 1720 and 1760, consisting mostly of onion bottles, cylindrical forms, mallet bottles and Constantia type specimens. Another concentration dated between 1670 and 1700 consists mainly of case bottles followed by shaft and globe/onion bottles. The majority of specimens appears to be of Continental origin.
