Abstract
Excavations at Godin Tepe in western Iran yielded large numbers of vessels in situ on floors of two successive architectural phases (Godin III:5 (2300-2100 B.C.) and Godin III:4 (2100-1900 B.C.)). Technological, morphological, and stylistic study of Godin III painted buff ware led to the proposal that relatively few potters produced this pottery in workshops. Neutron activation and petrographic thin-sectioning have been used to characterize paste of painted buff ware vessels from floor contexts in order to test the workshop production hypothesis.
