Abstract
The effects of accelerated aging on Whatman chromatography paper treated with six commercially available poly (vinyl acetate) copolymer emulsions (three vinyl acetate-ethylene and three vinyl acetate-dibutylmaleate) and two commercially available poly (vinyl acetate) homopolymer emulsions were observed. Loading factors, weight loss vs. time, folding endurance strength, elongation, reflectance, objective color, pH of the adhesives and paper-adhesive systems, and reversibility in water and toluene of the adhesives applied to glass plates are reported. It is concluded that several copolymers may be considered for use in the formulation of adhesives for book and paper conservation.
