Playing cards from the Württembergisches Landesmuseum in Stuttgart date from about 1430. The cards are made from layers of glued paper with calcium curbonate priming on the front, and a mixture of red lead and vermilion on the back. The background is red bole covered with twist-gold (laminated gold-silver lead. Pigments used were lead white (the most common white), chalk, lead-tin yellow, yellow lake, basic copper sulfate hydrate (CuSO₄ (OH)₆ x H₂O), an unidentified green, azurite, vermilion, madder lake, red lead, red ochre, charcoal black, and possibly lamp black, and a brown bistre-like pigment. Gold leaf, powder leaf, powder gold and mosaic gold (SnS₂) were used. See also 13-1059.
