The tapestry was removed from its mount after the protecting glass broke and slashed a section of the mounted fragment; this procedure is described as well as the attachment to the new support. Sections were cut out of the old mounting fabric to which the tapestry had been attached 20 years previously with thousands of stitches of beige and red thread; stitches were pulled and the tapestry was rolled off the support. A thick plain weave cotton of neutral brown replaced the previous red mounting material; the preparation of this cloth included washing in Orvus, cutting and sewing to size, and stretching. The unmounted tapestry was sandwiched between Mylar and foam core. Using photographs of the textile as it had been previously mounted, the fragments were positioned on the new support fabric; the foam core was slid out first to allow for further correction of alignment and then the Mylar removed. Brown cotton thread was used to attach the fragments onto the support. An ultraviolet absorbing plexiglass frame has been used to prevent further deterioration or accidents. -- AATA
