An unusually large number of very early Islamic manuscripts on parchment was found in the Yemen Arab Republic in 1972. Since only relatively few pages from this early time are existing in museums and libraries worldwide, this find has great significance for the scholarly research into the development of the Arabic script and the emergence of structural features in the copying of the Quran. This paper is an attempt to give historical and other background information on these topics and to outline the conservation treatment, presently being only a first aid treatment with the foremost purpose of stabilizing the objects and of rendering them suitable for investigation by scholars.
