Air pollution causes a modification of deterioration processes resulting in an increased rate of attack or in deterioration of materials which are weather-resistant in non-polluted environments. Present conservation processes are rather efficient but their results are ephemeral if treated materials remain exposed to an aggressive environment. The safety of cultural property exposed to environmental deterioration depends upon the operation of protection systems and maintenance services. See also 15-733.
