Abstract
Water-logged lacquerwares unearthed in China differ in material and workmanship from those of other countries, and the state of conservation varies. Different methods of dehydration, consolidation, and restoration were employed to meet the specific needs of each artifact. A slow natural drying process is used for the ramie-fabric-based lacquerwares and hard water-based lacquerwares with water contents less than 60%. For those wares with contents of 60-80% water an alcohol-ether displacement series is used. Broken and degraded lacquerwares with a thick and heavy base and rough lacquer surface are treated with tertbutyl alcohol for water displacement, and dried by the freeze vacuum sublimation procedure; lacquer putty mixed with glutinous powder can be used to repair the degraded lacquer coating.
