In 1954 an Old Kingdom boat was discovered beneath a pile of rubble south of the Great Pyramid of Giza (Egypt). It had been buried at the same time that King Cheops was buried in histomb in the pyramid. The boat, as discovered, was in 651 separate pieces. Its excavation took three years and its reconstruction by Ahmed Youssef Moustafa, Chief Restorer of the Egyptian Department of Antiquities, and a large crew of workers took several more years. Jenkins' book describes and illustrates (in photographs and diagrams) the discovery, excavation, and construction/reconstruction of the boat. It also covers Old Kingdom ship building and navigation, and Old Kingdom religious beliefs.
