Archaeological collections at the University of Michigan are stored according to their usage. Class 1 is frequently used reference material; 2 is occasionally consulted, documented material; 3 is bulk collections used rarely. Location of items and collection is by indices (e.g., computer generated). Class 1 items are held near offices, etc., and housed in dust-free cabinets with ease of access. Class 2 items are more remotely stored on industrial shelving. Class 3 are palletized off-site. This scheme allows good use of resources.
