The first part of the paper (see AATA 17-563) deals with the plastic modeling and the polychromy of the two sculptures, both dating from the 2nd half of the 13th century. During the restoration, special attention was given to the relationship between the carved wooden core, the chalk ground, and the polychromy. In one case, the unusually thick ground plays an important part in the final modeling; misleading effects of the sculpture's present poor condition are pointed out. The details of the other sculpture appear to have been carved of wood, and the ground apparently constitutes an even layer of moderate thickness all over. Its unusually good state of preservation makes it possible to see how the polychromy accentuatesthe plastic form by variations in surface gloss and to some extent by tone modelings with color.
