Abstract
Water-logged lacquerwares unearthed in China differ in materials and workmanship, and the states of their conservation vary when excavated. Hence, different methods of dehydration, consolidation and restoration are employed to meet the needs as required by their specific conditions. Slow natural drying process is used for those ramie-fabric-based lacquerwares and hard wood-based lacquerwares with less than 60% water content. For those with 60-80% water content where the slow natural drying process becomes unsuitable, alcohol-ether displacement series is used. The broken and degraded lacquerwires with thick and heavy base and rough lacquer surfice can be treated with ten-butyl alcohol for water displacement, freeze vacuum sublimation procedures for drying, and lacquer putty mixed with glutinous powder used to repair the degraded lacquer coating.
