Abstract
Coloring used for Japanese paintings contains a low amount of binder (animal glue) in proportion to pigment. Animal glue has good adhesion but if its proportion to the pigment in the paint is high, it often causes the color layer to flake off from the ground because it also has strong cohesion which generates internal forces within the paint layer. On the other hand, an unreasonably small proportion of the glue to the pigment can cause the color layer to chalk off. The same is observed when the glue weathers. Through examination of the damage found on the paintings on sliding doors and wall panels, we have discovered that the older the paintings were, more chalking off they showed and the less older, more flaking off. For the treatment of chalked-off parts we use the solution of synthetic resin and the emulsion for flaked-off parts. Sometimes thixotropic emulsion is successfully used for the flakedoff parts,whereas the normal emulsion is not effective for reattaching the hard layers. The important point in the treatment is that the resin should be left as little as possible on the surface of the color layers. This is because the residue of resin on the layers will result in gloss of the surface and allow stress to generate on the surface so that further damage will take place.
