Abstract
Stabilization, consolidation, preservation, conservation, etc. Are not clearly defined concepts, and are thus open to many interpretations. It is not known when and to what degree an art object really needs stabilization, nor is there any good understanding of the aftermath of stabilization treatments. Every object exists in equilibrium with its environment. Disturbance of this balance can affect a treated piece in a negative way. See also AATA 8-980 for related study and 21-914 for entire proceedings.
