Abstract
The 14th century church was built next to an artificial canal where fog and mists are frequent. The bricks are covered by a black crust in which microflorae were identified. The deterioration of the brick surface is attributed to these microorganisms. The frescoes inside the Church are flaking due to crystallization of salts (sulfates and nitrates). The frescoes are being restored by treatment with ammonium carbonate and barium hydroxide. Various biocides are being tested. See also AATA 21-914 for complete proceedings.
