Abstract
Methods of repairing damaged Chinese and Japanese hanging scrolls are summarized, illustrated by an example of work done on an 18th century Chinese landscape painting. The techniques for handling paper and silk scrolls that have been refined in Asia through many years of development are discussed, with a concentration on mounting and backing materials and methods. Asian adhesives, brushes, and knives are described. Special methods for washing a scroll and filling in losses are briefly discussed.
