This paper describes the deteriorating condition and subsequent treatment of an unvarnished wall-size painting executed in hot glue medium, an unusual technique favored by Vuillard for large decorative works. It was received for examination in order to determine how best to treat problems of paint loss and active cleavage between the various layers of paint as well as between ground and fabric that already constituted 50% of the painting. It was soon to leave Washington, DC, but was too fragile to travel. Inherent vice in the artist's method of rapid paint application, surface characteristics, previous restoration and a rigid time constraint all limited rather narrowly how this painting could betreated. The intent was to clean, consolidate and protect it without altering in any way color or surface characteristics. After testing various materials, the procedures ultimately chosen to care for this painting were quite traditional. A 10% solution of poly(vinyl acetate) emulsion and water was applied to local disruptions to consolidate. Cleaning was accomplished with a single application of a 1% solution of Orvis Liquid in water on a slightly damp swab. Details of the artist's technique, the painting's condition, causes of deterioration, analysis of the multiple problems, testing and completed treatment are included.
