Abstract
A review of stone conservation treatments and their efficacy; presents methods for cleaning, consolidation, repair, and protection. Cleaning systems include water-based techniques (immersion, water spray, mists, steam poultices), chemical methods (acid and alkaline solutions, ion-exchange resins, jelly pastes, etc.), mechanical methods (sandblasting, heat). The main classes of stone preservatives (both inorganic and organic) are presented and discussed, including silicon based consolidants. Information is provided on binders and fillers.
