Abstract
A static liquid culture system together with small discs of intact green sandstone were used to investigate the decay potential of 185 bacteria isolated from Portchester Castle and Tintern Abbey (England). The activity of these organisms under heterotrophic and autotrophic conditions is discussed. Results showed that many bacteria present on the stone are capable of producing severe decay. Graph.
