During extensive restoration work on the southwestern wall of the platform of the Cathedral of Bern, sculptural fragments of such international significance were found among the excavation debris in February 1986 that they were soon called the find of the century. Uncovered were about 500 fragments of about life-size stone statues, some of which were partially painted. They probably are remains from the destruction of images in Bern in 1528. The findings are stored presently in a controlled atmosphere in a tent in the depository of the Archaeological Service. The first symposium on them was held in cooperation with the Nationale Forschungsprogramm 16 Methods for the Preservation of Cultural Properties and the National Information Center for the Preservation of Cultural Properties (NIKE). This article is a report of the work that has been done to date.
