Abstract
The protection of cultural and natural heritage may be considered to have several facets: 1) In the case of the cultural heritage, whether in sites, in monuments or in museums, their care and scientific conservation, when required; 2) Physical care and control, which in relation to the cultural heritage, means legislation and other measures to prevent vandalism of monuments, illicit excavation of sites, theft of antiquities, their uncontrolled exportation and their smuggling from their country of origin; 3) For the natural heritage, appreciation and preservation of all aspects of the natural environment, protection of it against exploitation and degradation from whatever cause; and, 4) Protection of endangered species and elimination of commercial exploitation, such as the trade in skins and specimens of rare animals, birds, plants, and minerals.
