General discussion of the preservation and decay of wood and factors which influence whether wood will be preserved (biological breakdown, humidity, temperature, oxidation, light, hydrolysis, erosion). Use of the scanning electron microscope has shown that the intricate structure of the wood is destroyed step by step in the reverse order to that in which it was originally built up. The part played by the factors listed above in the decay of wood is discussed.
