An experiment was conducted to compare fiberglass and linen for lining paintings. It was determined that fiberglass has the following advantages: it is unaffected by changes in humidity, it is an even material, it has a greater strength than steel under tension, it is thinner (thereby, not necessarily increasing overall thickness and tension), it can be stretched more evenly, it is transparent, it is not hygroscopic, it is more rigid and substantial than linen canvas, and it does not attract mould growth or insects.
