Abstract
After tests, calcified bone, more fragile than the surrounding matrix, was removed using weak acetic acid buffered with sodium hydroxide. A quicker solution proved to be local use of hydrochloric acid after the exposed bone had been painted with Tornesite, a chlorinated rubber varnish. Alvar is advocated as an impregnant to harden cleaned bone. -- AATA
