This article is a description of the extraction, treatment, combinations, and creation of different metals and metal-based products in China in the 17th century. The manufacture of steel, copper, brass, tin, and mercury is described; as well as, procedures for the separation of gold from silver, of silver from lead, the making of ceruse, red lead paint, bichloride, and alum. Several books are quoted, mainly the Japanese Encyclopedia of 1609 and the Tien-Kong-Fay-We, also Sir G. Stanton's description of the trip of Lord Macartney to China. The article concludes by stating that, although the descriptions are vague, the classifications not scientific, and any idea of generalization absent, the articles in the Japanese Encyclopedia and the Tien-Kong-Kay-We as well as some others would have been of great importance to Europe in the 17th century. Now, in 1835, they are obsolete. And the author ends on a sad note saying that there is no hope for the advancement of science in China judging by an article published in 1820 which treats astronomy in pre-Ptolemaic terms.
