Abstract
Video printers are capable of producing fill colour continuous-tone prints from electronic sources such as video cameras, video players, video floppy discs and many others. The potential uses for this technology in conservation documentation include production of images from IR vidocon units and use in on-site situations where photographic facilities are limited. In our research project at Queen’s University, we tested the output from three commercially available video printers for colour fidelity, colour stability under varying environmental and storage conditions and consistency of reproduction. We found that the prints produced on the Hitachi VY-15A video printer using Kodak paper and dyes gave the best results for both colour fidelity in reproduction and for colour stability. The Panasonic EP70 followed by the Sony CVP G500 gave poorer results in these categories. The Sony machine produced the most consistent image from the same source in memory. We do not recommend that video prints be used as the only source of documentation for use in conservation as colour fidelity was not always accurate and image resolution is poor in comparison to photographs. We would recommend the use of video printers as a valuable supplementary system.
