Abstract
An evaluation of different corrosion reduction and stabilization techniques for painted metal was performed. Three techniques for corrosion reduction/stabilization were tested: mechanical removal, aqueous chelation using Tiron[registered], a commercial chelating agent, and non-aqueous iron complexing using 8-hydroxyquinoline in xylene. A visual appearance test and Scanning Electron Microscopy were used to judge the effectiveness of the corrosion reducing techniques. The results of the data regarding corrosion reduction/stabilization did not show a clearly significant difference overall between the three treatments. It did however indicate that the non-aqueous method, on average, produced the least acceptable appearance. For the data regarding the treatment’s effect on the surrounding paint, a statistically significant difference was found between the three treatments, with the non-aqueous complexing agent being ranked the worst.
