A brief history of the printing process known as chromolithography is outlined, followed by the discussion of a treatment carried out on a large bird’s eye view chromolithographic print from 1853 entitled: “View of Baltimore City, From Fairmount.” The treatment involved the removal of a fabric backing from the primary support using an enzyme poultice to help in the dissolution of a starch adhesive. An ethanol bath was carried out to reduce a disfiguring shellac varnish. This treatment step revealed a very complex structure of the object consisting of several layers including a surface coating and a varnish. The intricate relationship between these layers and their subsequent effect on the outcome of treatment is discussed in detail.
