This paper discusses the examination and treatment of a painted basketry hat from the Pacific Coast of North America. The examination included identification of fibers and pigments utilizing a polarizing light microscope and SEM/EDS. The main goal of the treatment was to return the badly misshapened hat to its original form. The composite materials incorporated into this artifact and its structure posed several challenges in the performance of this treatment. The reshaping was accomplished using a humidity chamber, and a custom built set of weights and supports.
