Abstract
Two wooden objects, samples of a golden leather wall hanging and a woolen blanket as well as sea-mammal intestine and collagen intestine were treated to clean, degrease and decontaminate them with fluid carbon dioxide in equipment which was actually intended for cleaning metal parts and belonged to the Danish firm Union Engineering. It was possible to remove large amounts of biocide dichlorodiphenyl trichlorethane (DDT) and lindane from the wooden objects and the wool sample. However, it proved impossible to remove the fungicide pentachlorophenol PCP from the wood, just as it was impossible to wash out the cross-linked linseed oil contained in a piece of an epitaph. On the other hand, it was possible to largely degrease the golden leather wall hanging, the sea-mammal intestine, and the collagen intestine with no harm to the objects. More study needs to be done on the possible uses of fluid carbon dioxide as green chemistry in restoration.
