Abstract
A severely rusted iron cauldron inscribed with the date 1505 was treated by reduced-pressure impregnation. A soft 3-layer covering was developed for the impregnation of a large object. The inner layer is polyester wool which contains the solution. The middle layer is cotton gauze tape which ties the inner wool layer, and the outer layer is silicone rubber for air tightness. The steps in restoration were as follows: 1. Cleaning by soft brushing in ethyl alcohol. 2. Covering with the soft air-tight covering. 3. Applying paraloid B 72 acrylic resin 30% in toluene under reduced pressure. 4. Removal of the cauldron and leaving it until completely dried. 5. Restoring the missing parts by FRP (Glass fiber + Epoxy resin Araldite CY 230, Hardener Epomate B 002), after molding the original parts with silicone rubber. -- AATA
