Cotton/polyester fabrics can be treated with durable press (DP) finishes which vary widely in chemical composition, catalyst, type (and duration) of cure, and quantity of formaldehyde scavengers. The effect of laundering these fabrics to reduce formaldehyde content is explored. The effect of laundering upon the stability of the DP finish is also characterized. A comparison among deionized (weakly acidic) and tap water and no washing-as well as ambient and heated dryers-is made. Generally, one deionized washing provided the best results, but the character of the DP must be matched to water quality to achieve the best results. -- AATA
