Various seamless shirts, known from written sources or extant today in several countries (Germany, Denmark, Scotland) are discussed in relation to the background of the seamless garment of Christ (Gospel of St. John 19:23). Looms and technical questions are considered. Suggests that the famous relic in Trier, claimed to be the seamless shirt of Christ and attracting millions of pilgrims, inspired some professional weavers (17th-19th centuries) in Lutheran countries to show that such shirts could be woven on ordinary looms by able weavers. Points out that seamless garments are well known in the Middle East, although they, in contrast to the Trier one, are sleeveless. The latter, a tunica manicata, seems to be connected with the Volto Santo crucifix in S. Martino Lucca. -- AATA
