The Orkney Hood, a woolen hooded shoulder cape excavated in 1867 in St. Andrew's Parish, Orkney, Scotland, has been dated by stylistic criteria to the Viking period. In 1981, it underwent a full analysis and conservation treatment. Fiber and dye analysis revealed that its brown coloration was due to the presence of pigment in the fibers and not to dye. The extent of the damage suffered by the piece was determined by visual examination alone. Because it was found to be in generally sound physical condition, it was wet cleaned before it was backed with a fine woven net and a duplicate hood shape of fine wool. The leather thongs found in the Hood were treated wih a lubricant (Pliantine Special G).
